If you are an Indian citizen transiting through Australia, you will need an Australia Transit Visa. This visa allows you to enter Australia while you wait for your next flight to your final destination.

While we do not offer the Australia Transit Visa for Indian citizens, we’re here to guide you through the application process so you can apply with ease.

Do Indian citizens need a Transit Visa for Australia?

Yes, Indian citizens need a transit visa to pass through Australia, even if they are just in the country for a short stopover. According to Australia’s visa policy, if you are passing through Australia on your way to another country, you must hold a valid transit visa to enter.

However, if you would like to transit through Australia on your way to a final destination with the option of visiting Australia on your way back or at a later date, then the Australia Visitor Visa (subclass 600) would be a better fit for you.

Learn more about the Australia Visitor Visa

What is the Australia Transit Visa?

The Australia Transit Visa (subclass 771) allows Indian citizens to transit through Australia for up to 72 hours. You must leave Australia within this period to avoid overstaying.

This visa cannot be extended, so if you wish to stay longer than 72 hours, you’ll need to apply for a different visa.

To qualify for this visa, you must:

  • Be outside Australia at the time of application

  • Have a confirmed flight booking to leave Australia within 72 hours of your arrival

  • Hold the necessary documentation to enter your next destination, such as a valid visa for that country

Documents required for the Australia Transit Visa for Indian citizens

When applying for an Australia Transit Visa, you will need to provide:

  • Scan of your passport biodata page: A clear, colored scan of the page is essential

  • Confirmed flight ticket: This is evidence of your onward journey to another destination

  • Entry permit for your next destination: A scan or copy of a visa or electronic authorization that grants you entry into the country you’re traveling to after Australia

How much is the Australia Transit Visa?

The Australia Transit Visa is free of charge. However, processing times can vary depending on your situation and how busy the Australian immigration department is. It’s important to apply well in advance of your travel date to avoid delays.

You can check the current processing times on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website.

How can Indian citizens apply for the Australia Transit Visa?

To apply for the Australia Transit Visa, Indian citizens must submit their application directly through the Australian Department of Home Affairs website. Follow these steps:

  1. Create an ImmiAccount: Go to the Australian government website and create an ImmiAccount if you don’t already have one.

  2. Complete the application: Fill out the online application form for the Transit Visa (subclass 771). You’ll be asked to provide personal information, travel details, and supporting documents, such as your passport and onward flight tickets.

  3. Submit your documents: Upload scans of the required documents.

  4. Submit the application: Once everything is complete, submit the application for processing. You can track the status of your visa through your ImmiAccount.
