  • The eVisa is valid from the issue date, even if you haven’t entered Brazil yet

  • You can request a stay extension while in Brazil, but it's not guaranteed and must be done through the Federal Police

Brazil eVisa duration

Last update: April 2025

The Brazil eVisa makes it easier to visit the country without dealing with consulate visits or long forms. But when it comes to how long you can actually stay, things can get a little murky. There’s the visa validity, the number of days you’re allowed per visit, and whether or not you can come back again.

If you're sorting out flights, accommodations, or planning a longer stay, knowing the timing matters. We'll walk you through what the eVisa covers and how long it’s valid for.

How long can you stay in Brazil with an eVisa?

The Brazil eVisa gives travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia a flexible way to visit. It's designed for tourism, business, or transit, and it’s valid for several years depending on your nationality.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BRAZIL EVISA

How long can I stay in Brazil with an eVisa

So while the eVisa itself gives you years of flexibility, the time you can spend in Brazil each year is limited. You’re welcome to enter and exit more than once, but each visit—and your combined stays—can’t go beyond that 90-day annual limit.

When does your Brazil eVisa become valid?

Your Brazil eVisa becomes valid on the date it’s issued. Not the day you arrive in Brazil.

This catches a lot of travelers off guard. It might seem minor, but it can affect how much use you actually get out of your visa, especially if you're planning to visit again later.

Let’s say you apply for your eVisa today, but your trip isn’t until four months from now. That four-month gap already counts against the total validity of your visa, even if you haven’t stepped on the plane yet.

Here’s how one traveler put it on Tripadvisor:

”“I applied in February for a trip in October thinking I was getting ahead. Turns out my eVisa was already six months into its 5-year validity by the time I landed. Not a huge deal now, but something to think about if you’re planning future visits.”

If your trip is confirmed, it’s best to apply a few weeks before departure. This way, you give yourself enough time for your visa to get approved without wasting months you’ll never use.

Can you extend your Brazil eVisa?

Yes, you can. But not automatically, and not for the visa itself. What you’re allowed to request is an extension of your stay while you're in Brazil.

If you're already in the country on a valid eVisa and need more time, you will need to visit a Federal Police office in person to submit the request. If it’s approved, you'll be granted up to the same number of days as your original stay. For most travelers, that means a possible extension of 90 days.

It’s important to note that Brazil allows a maximum total stay of 180 days per year, even if your visa is valid for multiple years. This annual cap applies to eVisa holders as well as visa-exempt nationals.

Extensions are reviewed case by case and are not guaranteed. To give yourself the best chance, we recommend applying for an extension at least two weeks before your valid eVisa expires. For more information, please visit the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

What happens if you overstay your visa in Brazil?

Overstaying without permission can get expensive. According to Brazilian immigration law, the fine is R$100 per day, capped at R$10,000. That’s around US$20 per day, with a maximum of about US$2,000. You might also face a ban of up to six months from re-entering Brazil after you leave.

That’s why many travelers choose to break up longer visits into shorter trips. Since the Brazil eVisa allows multiple entries, you’re free to leave and return as long as you don’t spend more than 90 days in Brazil within the same calendar year.
