What is the Temporary Permanence Permit in Chile?

This document allows you to enter the country without previously having a traditional visa or authorization for entry. This authorization, granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allows the entry of citizens determined by the Chilean State.

This permit has a duration of up to 90 days and can be extended for up to 90 more days, requesting the necessary permits from the immigration authorities. In turn, this document can be valid for up to 10 years. When the document is granted, according to each individual, the number of admissions allowed will be indicated.

Who is the Temporary Permanence Permit in Chile addressed to?

This travel document is subdivided into categories where it stipulates the entry of the following travelers. There are six subcategories of transitory permanence:

  • Permit for foreigners – This category allows travelers to enter for recreational, sports, health, study, business management, family and other purposes. This permit is granted to those foreigners who intend to enter the country but do not remain in a paid job or to live.

  • Ship crew permit – Valid for all types of ships, aircraft or land or rail transport vehicles belonging to companies engaged in the international transport of passengers and/or cargo.

  • Permits contemplated in international treaties – Any international treaty agreed with the Chilean government and that is in force.

  • Permit for foreigners living in border areas.

  • Permits in case of conditional entry.

  • Permission for Official Residents who finish their missions.

What can and cannot be done with the Temporary Permanence Permit?

Those who process the transitory stay permit may carry out all kinds of activities, except those that are paid during their stay. The remuneration is considered as a payment for work done in the country and paid by a Chilean company.

They may only request an exception from the National Immigration Service to be able to work in the tasks of those who need to carry out specific and sporadic activities. Some of these applicants include members and entertainment staff, athletes, speakers, consultants and technical experts.

What are the requirements to obtain Temporary Permanence in Chile?

To obtain this travel document, you will need to present the following documents:

  • Passport – You must present your passport digitally with complete information. For the document to be valid, it must be minimum valid for 6 months when entering the country.

  • Passport-size photo – You must present a passport-size photo that meets immigration requirements. If you don't have a photo, you can use the iVisa photo service on our website.

  • Economic accreditation – You must present documents that prove your own economic means, which allow you to travel around the country.

  • Hotel reservation – You must present the hotel reservation with the dates of stay and the confirmation of payment or reservation.

  • Declaration of reason for travel – You must specify the reason for travel to know which subcategory your income belongs to.
