What is the Denmark Schengen Visa?

The Denmark Schengen Visa is your ticket to hassle-free European travel. It lets you explore 27 Schengen countries without needing separate visas:

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Note that Denmark must be the first country you enter in the Schengen Zone with this visa.

What can I do with the Denmark Schengen Visa?

With this visa, you’re allowed to:

  • Visit Denmark and other Schengen countries for tourism and to visit family and friends.

How long is the Denmark Schengen Visa valid?

With this visa, you can stay in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days per entry within a 180-period. The best part is that you can hop around Schengen countries as much as you like, as long as your total stay doesn't last more than 90 days.

Please note: The Danish authorities ultimately decide whether you get a single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry visa. The multiple-entry ones can cover you from 180 days to five years.

Can I extend my Denmark Schengen Visa?

Extending a Denmark Schengen Visa can be quite challenging. Schengen Visas are typically issued for short stays, usually up to 90 days within 180 days.

Extensions of Schengen Visas are granted only in exceptional circumstances, such as medical emergencies or force majeure situations. You must provide strong proof to justify your extension request.

Denmark Schengen Visa required documents

To apply, you will need:

  • Schengen Visa application form
  • Two photographs: Taken recently.
  • Valid passport: With at least 6 months validity after arrival and two blank pages in your passport for visa stickers and entry stamps.
  • Travel itinerary: Including a copy of your return ticket and any confirmed tours.
  • Proof of accommodation: You'll need a hotel confirmation or a letter from relatives in Denmark to prove where you're staying.
  • Financial statements: Bank statements or salary slips proving that you have the necessary funds to cover your journey to the Schengen Zone.
  • Your collected fingerprints: If you have not registered your fingerprints in the past 59 months, you’ll need to provide your biometric data during your appointment.
  • Medical/travel insurance: With a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency medical treatment and repatriation in the Schengen Zone.

When you’re applying on behalf of your child or a minor, their birth certificates and parental consent must be provided.

How to apply for the Denmark Schengen visa

The general steps to apply are:

  1. Choose the Schengen visa type based on your travel purpose.
  2. Fill out the Schengen Visa application form accurately.
  3. Collect all necessary documents, including passport, photos, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, travel insurance, and financial means.
  4. Book a visa interview appointment at the embassy/consulate or visa application center.
  5. Present your application and documents at the appointment.
  6. Pay the visa application fee as per the current rates.
  7. Monitor the status of your visa application online or through the embassy/consulate.

Denmark Schengen Visa application costs and processing time

The government fee of about USD $84.53 (half-price for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and free for kids under 6 years old). Some exemptions apply.

Do I need the Denmark Schengen Visa if I’m transiting through the country?

If you are transiting at the airport in Denmark on your way to a non-Schengen country, you may need an Airport Transit Visa.

  • If a student, bring a recent, signed, and dated, letter from the institution specifying your enrollment.
  • If traveling for business, an invitation letter from your Danish host institution explaining your trip purpose.
  • Detailed travel itinerary, including activities and transportation.
  • For medical travel, a certificate from the institution confirming treatment availability and financial capability.
  • Health insurance with coverage of at least 30,000 euros in the Schengen area.

No, you'll need to pay a government fee. You won’t need to pay a government fee if you are:
  • Holders of diplomatic, official, or service passports traveling for official purposes.
  • A family member of an EU/EEA national.
  • Pupils, students, and accompanying teachers during a school trip.
