What you need to know

  • The Ethiopia eVisa is an electronic travel authorization that allows travelers from eligible countries to visit Ethiopia for a holiday, to do tourist activities, or visit family members.

  • There are two Ethiopia eVisa types. One is valid for 30 days and the other is valid for 90 days.

  • The validity of an Ethiopia e-Visa starts from the date you intend to enter Ethiopia, not from the document’s date of issue.

  • To apply for this eVisa, you need to have a passport with at least 6 months of validity from the date you intend to enter Ethiopia.

  • Only nationals from Kenya and Djibouti don’t need this eVisa to visit Ethiopia.

  • You don’t need a visa to transit through Ethiopia, except if you plan to leave the transit area from the airport.

  • You can use this type of visa ONLY if you plan to arrive by airplane at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (at the moment, the e-Visa is not valid at any other border posts).

  • If you apply from a country other than the country of your nationality (for example, you are Canadian, but you apply from the US), then you will be required to show your residence permit when you arrive in Ethiopia. This can be a letter or a visa sticker on your passport.
