When you are visiting Georgia you will probably be interested in visiting the Gelati Monastery in Western Georgia, this is a monastery complex, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

This monastery complex is located on a wooded hillside 8 kilometers northeast of Kutaisi. Many visitors note the beautiful Golden Age architecture and visit one of the most important churches in the country.

Years before becoming a tourist attraction, Gelati was a cultural center of the country's medieval renaissance, and many rulers have been buried there, including King David the Builder in the 12th century. This king inaugurated Gelati in 1106 as a center of Christian culture and Neoplatonic learning. This center of learning has been described as a "second Jerusalem" and a "new Athens". Unfortunately in 1510, the Turks burned the complex and although it was restored, this complex was not rebuilt and reconsecrated by the Christian culture until 1988.

Do not hesitate to visit this complex accompanied by a tour guide who will be able to give you much more information. He will also be able to help you find the best places to take pictures and enjoy the views of the place.
