Home of ancient Mayan cities, volcanos, and lakes, Guatemala, which means “place of many trees” in the local náhuatl language, is the most populated country in Central America. Its Mayan heritage, which is still relevant considering that 22 of the 25 languages spoken in Guatemala come from the Mayans, is one of the most impressive archeological places to visit in the country. El Mirador, Nakbé, Tikal, Uaxactún, Aguateca and Piedras Negras are some of the incredible places to see. Tikal, part of the Tikal National Park, was one of the most powerful ancient Mayan kingdoms. Here you can explore the Great Jaguar Temple, or Temple I, a funerary-ceremonial temple that was considered the door to the underworld. Although it’s well preserved, this 47mt pyramid has been partially restored, which means that it is not possible to climb the stairs, as it’s unsafe. However, the Great Jaguar Temple is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Guatemala. If you get to Tikal early in the morning, then a day would be more than enough to explore, but you could also spend a few more days relaxing in this gigantic place. Uaxactún is another important city. It was here that the foundations for the Maya Civilization research were established and where a deep study of the city took place. The three structures, built from North to South, are known as Group . The great ruins are aligned with the sun, which works as an astronomical viewpoint. You can spend a couple of days here since there’s a lot to see like the amazing wildlife, and with less visitors around. Bring food with you since there’s nowhere else around, and remember that the ideal weather to visit Uaxactún is from November to March. If you’re planning to visit Tikal and Uaxactún during your adventure, then it might be good to know that for 10 Quetzales you can take a bus from the Tikal National Park and it will just take about an hour to get to Uaxactún. Now, before talking about the volcanoes and hot springs, let’s talk about Quetzaltenango (Xela), which not only is the second biggest city in the country, but is also the perfect place to plan different trips from, which is great considering any main town will have buses to Xela, so this makes the whole experience easier (at least in the logistical sense). The place itself also has a lot of markets for you to look around, as well as churches. Ok, now to the volcanos! Tajumulco is one of the volcanoes you can get to from Xela. The hike will be tough since it has an altitude of 4,220mt, being the highest volcano in Central America. You can hike it in a day, but it is better if you camp on the mountain and take two days to do the whole hike. Just remember to bring warm clothes while you get ready to enjoy the breathtaking view from the top the next day. Another two days and camping on the volcano hike is at Acatenango, where you can see Lake Atitlan and Volcano Fuego (very active volcano) from the top. The last hike would be at Volcano Pacaya. This one only takes a couple of hours back and forth but if you want to make the best of the experience, try going early in the morning so you can see some of the red bubbly lava. After this hike you can get back to where you’re staying in Antigua and just enjoy the vibrant city. For an aquatic experience, you cannot miss Semuc Champey. Just getting there would be a whole adventure, but after sweating like crazy, the blue waters of its rivers will refresh your body while you get a beautiful view. Crater Azul is another gem and one of the greatest places to check out in Guatemala. For this one you’ll need a boat trip, but you’ll see amazing wildlife before getting to the transparent waters where you can swim and snorkel. Make sure to go between December-March. From Xela (remember this place from before?) you can get to Fuentes Georginas, a fun hot spring in the mountains with a bunch of pools that have different warmth levels. You’re probably getting excited about visiting Guatemala now. Great! Now, let’s talk about the Guatemala Health Pass, a document you’ll need before arriving in the country that iVisa can help you with. What is the Guatemala Health Pass? Now that the world is somehow starting to open again, there are a lot of health measures to follow coming in and out of a country in order to stay safe and keep everybody else safe too. This pass is requested as one of the biosecurity protocols to enter Guatemala. All you need to do is fill in the information required, such as the name of the airline, your flight and seat numbers. If you’re going for tourism or work, then you’ll have to fill in the date you’re supposed to leave the country. Include your personal info, including the country where you’re coming from and the place or places you’ve been in the last 14 days. You also have to report your health history, which in this case means if you’ve been sick or in contact with someone sick, as well as check the evaluation of symptoms. You’ll also have to provide a negative PCR or antigen COVID-19 test result taken in the 72 hours before your trip to Guatemala, or a vaccine certificate. If an unvaccinated traveler doesn’t have the PCR test, there’s a health facility in La Aurora International Airport (AILA) to take the test. Remember that wearing a mask is mandatory, as well as keeping a safe distance from others and washing your hands regularly.
