How can domestic helpers get a visa extension?
Domestic helpers usually have two-year contracts and receive two visas from the Immigration Department. The first one has a one-year validity, and it allows them to start working in Hong Kong immediately. The second one is a one-year visa to be activated when exiting and re-entering Hong Kong. So, the first visa is activated when issued, while the second one requires the owner to leave the country for vacation or to visit their family after a year of employment. They can apply for a visa extension if they still didn’t have the opportunity to leave Hong Kong, which means they still didn’t activate the second visa.
Other circumstances that permit the extension of stay are if the domestic helper does not have a full 2-year visa due to their passport validity, or if the employer and domestic helper mutually agree to extend the contract by a short period.
