The Hungary Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows eligible travelers to visit Hungary and other countries within the Schengen Area.

The Hungarian Schengen Visa is meant for non-European Union nationals who want to travel to Hungary for short stays.

There are several countries whose citizens do not need to apply for a Hungary Schengen Visa for short stays of up to 90 days.

Do minors have to apply for the Hungary Schengen Visa?

Yes, minors who are citizens of countries that require a Schengen visa will also need to apply for a Hungary Schengen Visa.

The visa application form must be signed by both parents or legal guardians.

If the minor travels with only one parent, written consent from the other parent is needed. If the minor travels alone, written consent from both parents or legal guardians is required.

A copy of the minor's birth certificate is usually required.

How long is the Hungary Schengen Visa valid?

The Hungary Schengen Visa is valid for 180 days, with a permitted stay of up to 90 days per entry.

The embassy decides if you will receive a multiple-entry, double-entry, or single-entry visa.

Can I extend my Hungary Schengen Visa?

You typically can't extend the Schengen visa while traveling, except in cases of force majeure, humanitarian reasons, or serious medical reasons.

Hungary Schengen Visa requirements

The first step to preparing for the Hungary Visa application process is gathering the essential documents you must submit:

  • Printed and signed application form

  • 2 passport photos that meet the government requirements

  • Valid passport, issued in the past 10 years, valid for at least 6 months, and with at least 2 blank pages

  • Copies of your previous Schengen Visas (if applicable)

  • Proof of financial stability and ability to finance your trip, such as bank statements

  • Proof of accommodation, for example, a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from a host

  • Return flight ticket reservation to support the fact that you can afford your trip and prove you'll return home

  • Health insurance for travel covering hospitalizations, emergencies, urgent treatments, healthcare, death, or a minimum coverage of at least €30,000

How to apply for the Hungary Schengen Visa

Go to the website of the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate in your home country and follow their instructions.

Prepare the necessary documents and attend your appointment. Remember that an interview may be required.

Hungary Schengen Visa costs and processing times

The government visa fee is about US$85. For children between the ages of 6 and 12, a government fee of about US$42.87 applies, while children under 6 years old are free.

Sometimes these fees can be paid online, depending on the country you are applying from. Otherwise, you must pay the fee at your appointment in cash or by card.

Hungary entry requirements

To enter Hungary, you generally need a valid passport, a Schengen Visa, depending on your nationality, proof of your visit's purpose, evidence of sufficient funds, travel insurance, accommodation details, and a return ticket.

Proving your financial stability and ability to afford the trip is essential to the application process. There are several ways to demonstrate that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Hungary:

Bank statements: You'll need to provide bank statements from the last three to six months that show regular income and enough money in your bank account to cover your expenses during your stay.

Proof of prepaid accommodation or transport: If you've already paid for your accommodation or transport, you should provide proof of these bookings.

Sponsorship letter: If someone else is financially supporting your trip (a sponsor), you'll need a letter from them confirming this arrangement.

There are specific requirements for the photos you must submit with your Hungarian Schengen Visa application. These include:

Size and quantity: You'll need two recent passport-sized photos. The dimensions should be 35mm x 45mm, in color.

Background: The photos should have a white background.

Facial expression: You should have a neutral expression, with your mouth closed and eyes open, looking directly at the camera.

Head position: Your head should be centered and facing the camera. Ensure your entire face is visible, from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin.

Eyes: Your eyes should be clearly visible. If you wear glasses, ensure there's no glare on the lenses. Tinted glasses and sunglasses are not allowed.

Lighting: The photo should be well-lit, with no shadows on your face or the background.

Head coverings: Generally, head coverings are not allowed unless worn for religious reasons, and even then, they must not obscure any part of your face.

Quality: The photo should be clear and focused, with no creases or marks.

Processing a Hungary Schengen Visa can take up to 45 days from the date of the interview. However, appointment slots can be limited. For that reason, we recommend you apply at least 2 months in advance to avoid any delays.
