India tourist evisa validity

Last update: May 2025

Many travelers struggle to make sense of the India Tourist eVisa validity. The issue date, the entry window, and the length of stay are all different. It’s easy to confuse them if you haven’t applied before.

This confusion can affect your entire trip. If your travel dates don’t match up with your visa terms, it can throw off your flights, hotel check-ins, or return plans. It’s the kind of detail that causes problems when it’s overlooked.

This guide breaks it down in simple terms. You’ll learn exactly when your visa starts, how long it lasts, and how to make sure your travel dates line up.

How long is an India Tourist eVisa valid?

Before you start booking flights and hotels, it’s worth knowing exactly how the India Tourist eVisa works. “Validity” is the the time frame you’re allowed to enter India. “Length of stay” is how long you can stay in India once you’ve arrived.

Visa type Validity period Entries allowed Max stay per visit
Tourist (30 days) 30 days from date of first arrival Double 30 days
Tourist (1 year) 365 days from date of issue Multiple 90 days (180 for US, UK, CA, JP)
Tourist (5 years) 5 years from date of issue Multiple 90 days (180 for US, UK, CA, JP)
Business eVisa 365 days from date of issue Multiple 180 days per visit
Conference eVisa 30 days from date of arrival Single 30 days
Medical eVisa 60 days from date of first arrival Triple 60 days
Medical Attendant eVisa 60 days from date of first arrival Triple 60 days

If you’re issued a 30-day India Tourist eVisa, the clock starts ticking from your first arrival in India, not the issue date. Let’s say your visa is granted on July 1. You fly to India on July 10. From that day, you’ll have 30 days to enjoy your trip.

Because your visa allows double entry, both visits must happen within the dates printed on your visa. If the visa says it expires August 1, you need to enter before that date, even if your stay runs past it.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE INDIA TOURIST EVISA

What happens if you overstay your India eVisa?

If you stay in India beyond the validity of your eVisa, you’re officially overstaying, and that comes with more than just a fine. Indian immigration monitors overstay records closely, and even short overstays can have long-term consequences.

  • For overstays of up to 90 days, the penalty is US$ 300 (around ₹25,000).

  • If you overstay 91 to 180 days, the fine increases to US$ 400 (around ₹33,000).

  • Overstaying more than 180 days results in a US$ 500 fine (around ₹41,000) and could trigger legal action, including blacklisting.

These fines must be paid before departure, typically at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office(FRRO) or at your airport’s immigration desk. You'll also need to submit a letter explaining the overstay and may be asked to complete additional documentation.

Beyond the fine, overstaying has longer-term consequences. Your passport could be flagged in India’s immigration system, which may result in an entry ban on future visits. Many travelers also report difficulties getting new Indian visas approved after an overstay, even if it was unintentional. This can affect not only tourist visas but also business, student, and long-term applications.

In some cases, overstaying in one country can also raise red flags in other visa applications. Many governments share immigration data, so one incident can impact more than just your next trip to India.

Where can I apply for an India visa online?

The obvious choice would be to apply through the government website. However, government portals are known to be unpredictable. Forms can include vague or unclear questions, and individual circumstances aren't always accounted for. If something is missed or filled out incorrectly, applications may be rejected without any explanation.

We’re a private visa service provider and when you apply with us, your form is carefully reviewed before submission. We check for common errors and flag issues that could lead to a rejection. Our team understands the nuances that often trip people up, which is why we’ve maintained a global approval rate of 97%.

India Tourist eVisa validity FAQs

1. What is the validity period of an India Tourist eVisa?

The validity period of an India Tourist eVisa depends on the type selected:

  • 30-day Tourist eVisa: Valid for 30 days from the date of arrival in India.

  • 1-year Tourist eVisa: Valid for 365 days from the date of issue.

  • 5-year Tourist eVisa: Valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

It's important to note that the validity period determines the time frame within which you can enter India, not the duration of your stay.

2. Can I enter India on the last day of my eVisa validity?

Yes, you can enter India on the final day of your eVisa's validity period. However, your stay duration will still be subject to the maximum allowed per visit, which varies based on your nationality and the type of eVisa. For instance, US, UK, Canadian, and Japanese citizens can stay up to 180 days per visit on a 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist Visa.

3. What happens if I overstay my India eVisa?

Overstaying your eVisa can lead to penalties:

  • Up to 90 days: Fine of US$ 300 (approximately ₹25,000).

  • 91 to 180 days Fine of US$ 400 (approximately ₹33,000)

  • More than 180 days: Fine of US$ 500 (approximately ₹41,000), potential legal action, and possible blacklisting.

These fines must be paid before departure, typically at an FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) or at your port of exit. Overstaying can also affect future visa applications and travel plans.

4. Is the India eVisa valid for multiple entries?

The number of entries allowed depends on the type of eVisa:

  • 30-day Tourist eVisa: Allows double entry.

  • 1-year and 5-year Tourist eVisas: Allow multiple entries.

Ensure that each entry falls within the overall validity period of your eVisa.
