Updated on Oct 10, 2024

If you’ve traveled to Israel without a visa before, you’ll need to meet a new requirement soon.

From August 1, 2024, an Israel ETA will be required for all travelers who don't need a visa. You can start applying for this travel document from July 1, 2024.

We’re here to help you understand the Israel ETA and make planning your trip a bit easier. We'll provide you with all the necessary information about this new requirement, ensuring you're ready for your next visit to Israel. Let’s get started.

What is the new Israel ETA?

The Israel Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), officially known as the ETA-IL, is a digital authorization that is now required for visa-exempt nationals planning to visit Israel. It must be obtained before traveling to the country. Unlike a traditional visa, the Israel ETA does not involve an embassy visit or a physical stamp in your passport.

This ETA system is part of a larger trend where countries screen travelers before they arrive, thus increasing security at borders. For example, the United States has ESTA, Canada uses an eTA, and Europe is rolling out ETIAS.

Designed specifically for short-term visits, the Israel ETA allows visa-exempt travelers to enter Israel for tourism, business, and other non-work-related activities. Applicants should apply for the ETA at least 72 hours before their intended travel date to Israel.

Once approved, the ETA allows for multiple entries into Israel and remains valid for up to two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each visit can last no longer than 90 days.

Who needs to apply for an Israel ETA?

All visa-exempt travelers planning a trip to Israel must now apply for the Israel ETA. If you're from one of the countries that previously didn't require a visa to enter Israel, you’ll need to secure this authorization before you travel.

The countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for the Israel ETA include:

  • Europe: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, and others.

  • Americas: United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and others.

  • Asia: Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and others.

  • Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, and others.

  • Africa: South Africa, Mauritius, and others.

To get a complete list of the visa-exempt countries, please visit the Israeli government website.
