If you're traveling to Mexico by land, don't forget there’s an important form you need.

Along with your passport (and a visa if required), you also need the Mexico Tourist Card. This form documents your visit and is needed to enter the country.

Completing this form ahead of your travel can help you avoid delays and confusion at the border. Let's walk through what you need to make this process as easy as possible.

What is a Mexico Tourist Card?

The Mexico Tourist Card, also known as the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), is a necessary document for tourists traveling to Mexico by land for short visits. Unlike a visa, the FMM is mandatory for all foreign travelers, including US and Canadian citizens who do not need a visa.

The FMM helps manage border control by keeping track of all visitors during their stay in Mexico. It collects information about your travel dates and the purpose of your visit.

You need to have your FMM stamped by Mexican immigration authorities upon entry. Be sure to keep this document safe throughout your stay, as you’ll need to present it when you leave the country.

What are the requirements for a Mexico Tourist Card?

All international tourists planning to visit Mexico for leisure or vacation must secure a Tourist Card. The FMM is necessary whether you enter Mexico by foot, car, or bus, and it applies to everyone in your group, including children.

When applying for a Mexico Tourist Card, you need:

  • A valid passport or passport card.

  • Your personal details, including your name, nationality, and date of birth.

  • Your travel itinerary, such as arrival and planned departure dates.

  • Your contact information and the address where you will stay in Mexico.

The Tourist Card is valid for up to 180 days after arrival. If you stay for up to 7 days and enter Baja California by land, you won't have to pay for the card. There's a fee for longer stays or if you enter through other border points.

You can complete the Tourist Card form online up to 30 days before entering Mexico. Doing this before your trip can make your border crossing smoother.
