Summary
  • Visa on arrival ends May 30, 2025 – eVisa is now mandatory.
  • Documents required include proof of flights, accommodation, and funds.
  • Biometric checks on arrival (fingerprints + photo) – allow 15–20 extra minutes.

Planning a trip from South Africa to Nigeria? You can no longer rely on getting a visa at the airport. As of May 30, 2025, the visa-on-arrival program is ending, and travelers without a pre-approved eVisa risk being turned away at the border.

Here’s how to apply online, what to expect at the airport, and what documents you need — all tailored to South African travelers.

Do South Africans need a visa for Nigeria?

Yes. The Nigeria eVisa is a single-entry travel document that lets South African citizens visit Nigeria for up to 30 days. The entire application is online - no consulate visits, no paper forms, no interviews.

Important: After May 30, 2025, you won’t be allowed to board your flight without an eVisa linked to your passport. If you already have a visa-on-arrival approval, you'll still be able to enter the country with it until that date.

Quick facts about the Nigeria eVisa

  • Valid for 90 days from issue date
  • Allows a 30-day stay
  • Single-entry only
  • Fully digital and approved online

How South Africans can apply for the Nigeria eVisa

Applying is simple when you use iVisa:

  1. Fill out your passport and travel details on our website or mobile app

  2. Pay online with card, Apple Pay, or PayPal

  3. Upload your documents and simply wait – approvals take a minimum of 48 hours

Arrival in Nigeria: What to expect at the airport

Although the visa is digital, you’ll need to go through biometric screening when you land:

  • Join the eVisa line
  • Fingerprinting and photo capture
  • Show your eVisa approval and passport

⏱️ Time needed: around 15–20 minutes

🗨️ Michael Zervos from Project Kosmos shares his experience:

“When you arrive, the process is pretty straightforward. They take your photo, scan your fingerprints, and within minutes you're through. Everyone was polite and helpful."

Required documents for South African applicants

✔️ Valid South African passport (minimum 6 months validity)

✔️ Digital passport-style photo

✔️ Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)

✔️ Proof of return flight

✔️ Bank statements from the last 6 months

✔️ Parental consent and birth certificate for minors

✔️ Invitation letter if staying with friends or family

Invitation letter checklist (if applicable):

  • Host’s full name and Nigerian address
  • Your travel dates
  • Copy of their Nigerian ID or residence permit

🗨️ Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert:

"If you can't get an invitation letter and you're staying with family or friends, book a hotel with a free cancellation policy and submit the reservation as part of your application."

Why use iVisa instead of the Nigerian government site?

Many South African travelers report technical issues or card failures on the government platform. iVisa helps you skip the frustration:

With iVisa Nigerian government site
Easy application in 14 languages English only
Cards accepted (incl. ZA banks) Payment failures common
24/7 customer support No tech support
Application review before submission Mistakes may delay approval

💡Cian T., Pretoria:

“Tried 4 times on the gov site and my payment failed every time. iVisa got me sorted in minutes.”

How much does the Nigeria eVisa cost?

Prices vary depending on processing speed and services. You can check the current fees for South Africa → Nigeria here:

FAQs for South Africans

Can I still use the Nigeria visa on arrival? No – South Africans must use the eVisa after May 30, 2025.

Is biometric screening done before departure? No. It happens when you land in Nigeria.

Which airports accept the eVisa? Lagos (LOS), Abuja (ABV), Port Harcourt, Kano, Calabar, and Enugu are all valid entry points.

What if I make a mistake on my application? iVisa checks your documents before submitting to reduce errors.

Your eVisa isn’t enough - landing card required too

Don’t risk delays at immigration. Nigeria now requires all incoming travelers to submit a Landing Card, even if you already have an approved eVisa.

This digital form has fully replaced the old paper versions and should be completed before you travel. It’s fast, simple, and can be done entirely online. Apply with iVisa and get both your eVisa and landing card sorted in one go.

And don’t forget: a Nigeria exit card is required too. You can fill that out via the government portal within 96 hours of departure.

Ready to travel?

Secure your Nigeria eVisa and travel stress-free. iVisa takes care of the process while you plan your trip.
