Focusing back on the airport, ATMs and currency exchange facilities ensure that travelers can easily perform transactions or exchange their foreign currency upon arrival or before departure. The Al Jadeed Exchange, located near the information desk, serves departing and arriving passengers, making financial transactions hassle-free.
Recognized as a 4-Star Airport by Skytrax, Muscat International Airport stands out for its facilities, comfort, cleanliness, shopping, food & beverages, staff service, and security/immigration. This accolade is a testament to the airport's exceptional standards, offering an easy and enjoyable departure and arrival point into Oman.
In this modern oasis, every step I took through Muscat International Airport was an experience blending efficiency with the unique charm of Omani culture. From arrival to departure, the airport serves as a beautiful intro and conclusion to the adventures in Oman.
Arrival in Oman: My first steps at Muscat International Airport

Arriving in Oman and stepping into Muscat International Airport immediately gave me a sense of the country's renowned hospitality. The arrival hall welcomed me with its vibrant ambiance, where the journey into Oman truly begins.
Disembarking from the plane, I was greeted by the warmth Oman is famous for. The airport's design is spacious and thoughtfully arranged with moving walkways, easing the walk to passport control. This efficiency is a prelude to the seamless experience that awaits immigration.

Approaching passport control, it's crucial to have your travel documents ready. Oman has streamlined its entry process with an eVisa system, allowing travelers to obtain their visa online before arrival. This simplifies entry and significantly speeds up the process at passport control. The staff there are known for their professionalism and efficiency, ensuring a swift passage for all travelers.
Traveler's tip: Leverage the convenience of the Oman eVisa application for a
hassle-free entry. Having all your documents, including the eVisa, prepared before your arrival
can make the immigration process even smoother.
Once my visa was checked, I was required to have a biometric picture and my fingerprints taken. Thanks to the airport’s fast, modern machines, it didn’t slow me down much and took just a few minutes.
Also, remember that a significant requirement to clear immigration is that you have a place to stay. You can prove this with a hotel booking confirmation or a letter from a sponsor hosting you in Oman.
Once past immigration, the baggage claim area was my next stop. Muscat International sets a high standard with its luggage handling system. The area has transparent, easy-to-read digital displays directing you to the correct carousel for your flight's luggage. You’ll also find free trolleys to load your bags between the carousels. This attention to detail and organization exemplifies the Omani approach to hospitality.
Customs: Last step before heading to the city
Navigating through customs and beyond at Muscat International Airport was an enlightening part of my journey. After collecting my luggage, which arrived promptly thanks to the efficient handling system, I moved towards the customs area, ready for the next steps.
The customs process in Muscat is straightforward if you're prepared. You must declare any items subject to customs duty or prohibited. Before my trip, I checked the latest guidelines on the Oman Customs website, ensuring I wasn't carrying anything that could complicate my entry. The customs officials were thorough but professional, making the process smooth for travelers who had their documents and declarations ready.
Exploring the airport’s main hall
Once through customs, the vastness and beauty of Muscat International Airport's public spaces came to life. Incorporating local Omani artwork creates a vibrant showcase of the country's cultural heritage, providing travelers with a unique and enriching experience and adding a dimension of local flavor and beauty to the airport's modern conveniences and amenities.

It complements the array of dining, shopping, and relaxation options. It makes the airport a transit point where Omani hospitality and culture are proudly displayed.
Signage throughout the airport is clear and available in Arabic and English, guiding you effortlessly to different airport sections, whether you're looking for car rentals, taxi stands, or shuttle services to the city center.
I noticed the airport's commitment to traveler convenience right away. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal for two hours, with the option to reconnect using a new password, which can be obtained by providing your mobile phone number or visiting an Information Desk, allowing me to catch up on emails and inform my family of my safe arrival.

I also bought an Omantel SIM card at the kiosk outside the customs exit. The telecom services section in the arrivals hall houses Omantel and other operators. Carefully analyze what’s on offer before purchasing, as there are great perks to picking the perfect package for your trip. Don’t be afraid to shop around.
The airport also offers a variety of dining and shopping options, from local Omani cuisine to international fast-food chains and duty-free shops filled with souvenirs, electronics, and luxury items.
It was an excellent opportunity to grab a bite (I opted for a quick sandwich and do some last-minute shopping before heading to my accommodation).
Transportation: From Muscat International Airport to the City
Heading to the bustling heart of Muscat from its International Airport was an adventure marked by an array of convenient transportation choices.
Taxis: The reliable classic
Getting a taxi was my first choice for direct, hassle-free transit to my hotel. The well-organized taxi stands just outside the arrivals hall caught my eye with its clear display of fixed rates for various city landmarks. This upfront pricing was a relief, ensuring a fair deal without haggling.
The fare to the city center is about 16€ (OMR 6.500) for up to 4 passengers, making it an affordable and stress-free option for direct travel, especially for those unfamiliar with the city or the local language. The official taxis, recognizable by their white and orange colors, operate with set rates using a taximeter, ensuring fair pricing.
For those looking for a digital approach, the OTaxi app is a local alternative to Uber, which, interestingly, doesn't operate from the airport. However, Uber remains an option for your return trip to the airport from the city.
Pro tip: Keep an eye out for taxi deals and discounts; OmanTel regularly offers
Promotions and discount codes for OTaxi when you buy a tourist SIM card from them.

Car rentals: Freedom on four wheels
For travelers craving the freedom to explore at their own pace, the arrivals hall houses desks for several car rental agencies, including extensive international names and local providers.
Whether you are looking for a compact car to navigate the city streets or something more rugged for Oman's diverse terrains, you'll find plenty of options to suit your driving preferences.
Public Transport: Upcoming Enhancements
While Muscat's public transport options from the airport are currently more limited, exciting developments are on the horizon.
Plans to introduce bus services promise to enhance connectivity between the airport and Muscat's key locations, signaling a future where exploring the city could become even more accessible and convenient.
Currently, you can use bus routes like bus eight and A21, operated by Mwasalat, which offer direct connections to the city center, providing an economical and convenient option for those not in a hurry.
Departure: Leaving Oman Through Muscat International Airport

When it was time to depart from Muscat, I headed to the terminal's second floor to find the check-in and departure areas. The airport hosts many airlines, including major carriers such as Oman Air, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways, ensuring connections to numerous global destinations.
One of the first steps in the departure process is checking in for your flight. Many airlines offer online check-in services, allowing you to bypass the check-in queues at the airport.
Security and passport control
Next, I headed to Muscat International Airport's passport control area. Designed to ensure the safety and compliance of all travelers, there are specific procedural details to keep in mind.
Passport control
I presented my travel documents to immigration officers at the counter. They verified my identity and travel authorization before allowing me to proceed to the departure gates.
My tip for getting through passport control without a hitch is always to be prepared before you get to the counter. Always:
-
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and you have all necessary visas for your destination.
-
Depending on your nationality or destination, check if you need to fill out a departure card. This is usually provided by your airline or available at the airport.
-
Answer the Immigration officer's questions about your trip, such as its purpose, duration, and destination, honestly and succinctly. Be polite and remember they are simply doing their job, and being cooperative will make the process easier for you and them.
Security screening
I face my next challenge once I get the all-clear from passport control. The security screening area might look daunting initially, but it’s very efficient if you’re prepared. The security process typically involves the following:
-
X-ray screening: All carry-on luggage and personal items must go through an X-ray machine. It's advisable to remove laptops, liquids (in containers of no more than 100ml and placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag), and any metal objects before screening to expedite the process.
-
Body scan or metal detector: Passengers walk through a metal detector or body scanner. Be prepared to remove belts, shoes, and sometimes even watches or large jewelry if requested by security personnel.
-
Random checks: Some passengers may be selected for random checks, which could include a pat-down search or additional screening of electronic devices. Cooperation with security staff is essential during these checks.
Tips for a smooth process
-
Dress for security: Wear easily removable outerwear and minimal metal accessories to speed up the security check. If you’re in hijab, skip a complicated style that requires lots of pins and looks bulky and opt for a simple draping that can easily be undone if security officials request (in Oman, a female security guard attends to female travelers.)
-
Follow instructions: Pay close attention to the instructions from airport staff and signage around the security and passport control areas to ensure compliance and reduce delays.
-
Pack your laptop and liquids at the top of your bag so that you can easily remove them from your carry-on when you get to the security checkpoint.

As my time in Oman drew to a close, my departure from Muscat International Airport became the final chapter of my journey. Walking into the modern and expansive departures terminal, I was immediately enveloped in a sense of comfort and ease, reflective of Oman's warm hospitality.
Opting for a serene start, I decided to spend some time in one of the airport lounges. I had read about the Primeclass Lounge and Majan Lounge, both offering access regardless of travel class. I decided to treat myself to a bit of luxury. The tranquility and a selection of snacks and beverages provided a perfect setting to reflect on my travels.
Feeling peckish, I explored the dining options available. The variety was impressive, from international cuisine at award-winning restaurants to the cozy Muscat Bakery & Coffee Shop, where I indulged in fresh pastries and rich, aromatic coffee. This culinary exploration was a delightful way to savor my last moments in Oman.

The array of products, from luxury brands to unique local handicrafts, offered a chance to pick up a few last-minute gifts and souvenirs. Finding the right items to remember my trip and share with loved ones back homewas satisfying.
The airport's additional amenities further enhanced my departure experience. I stayed connected with friends and family using the free Wi-Fi, ensuring my digital life was as engaged as my physical journey. The presence of children's play areas, prayer rooms, and medical services spoke volumes about the airport's commitment to catering to diverse needs and preferences.
I made my way to the gate with a deep appreciation for Muscat International Airport's efficiency and the smooth processes that had marked my departure. This terminal wasn't just a transit point; it was a place where the final memories of my Omani adventure were made, leaving me with a lasting impression of warmth and hospitality that I would carry with me back home.
