Summary
  • Canadians must complete the ED Card before arriving in Sint Maarten, even for transit or boat arrivals.

  • Each traveler, including children, needs their own form – group applications are available via iVisa.

  • iVisa offers a smoother, multilingual (including French) experience with instant processing, unlike the glitchy government portal.

Planning a sunny getaway to Sint Maarten from Canada?

Before you pack your bags, there’s one essential thing Canadian travelers shouldn’t skip: the Sint Maarten Electronic Disembarkation (ED) Card.

Here's everything you need to know.

What is the Sint Maarten ED Card?

The Electronic Disembarkation (ED) Card is an online entry form for travelers visiting Sint Maarten.

It’s not a visa, but a requirement to show upon arrival.

💡 Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert:

"While the ED card is not required for boarding, it's nice to know you've filled it out before you go. Register before your flight to breeze through customs."

If you haven't registered beforehand, you'll be able to fill out a paper form upon arrival, which may delay your entry with queues.

Is Sint Maarten the same as Saint Martin?

Sint Maarten is the southern, Dutch side, while Saint Martin or St. Martin refers to the northern, French side.

Though the island functions as a single destination for many Canadian visitors, the French and Dutch sides each offer a different experience.

Do I need the ED card for both Sint Maarten and Saint Martin?

✅ You need the ED Card if you... ❌ You do not need the ED Card if you...
Arrive by air at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on the Dutch side Fly directly to Grand Case–Espérance Airport (SFG) on the French side
Arrive by boat to Sint Maarten Enter the French side via ferry from another French territory
Transit through Sint Maarten to another destination Cross the open land border between the two sides (no border checks)

Do Canadians need the ED Card?

Yes. If you’re Canadian, you’ll need to complete the ED Card before arriving in Sint Maarten - even if you’re just transiting.

You’ll also need:

  • A passport valid for 3 months beyond your stay
  • A return or onward ticket
  • Proof of where you’re staying (hotel confirmation or address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • If traveling with minors: a consent letter if one or both parents aren’t present

🚫 The ED Card doesn’t replace a visa if your nationality requires one.

How to get your Sint Maarten ED Card online

1️⃣ Fill out your details on the government platform or through our handy iVisa platform or on the go via the mobile app

2️⃣ Upload your passport scan

3️⃣ Submit and receive your ED Card via email instantly

💡 Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert, recommends:
