Puerto Ricans: Don't forget the Sint Maarten ED Card before you go

Summary
  • Puerto Rican travelers must complete the ED Card before entering Sint Maarten, even if they’re arriving by cruise or just transiting.
  • Each traveler, including kids, needs their own ED Card – but it’s easy to apply for multiple travelers at once using iVisa.
  • iVisa makes it simple with a smooth Spanish-language form and 24/7 customer service, ideal for travelers flying in or joining cruises from Puerto Rico.

If you’re flying in from Puerto Rico to Sint Maarten (Dutch side) or joining a cruise that stops there, you’ll need to fill out the Electronic Disembarkation (ED) Card online before your trip — yes, even if you’re just transiting through the airport.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Sint Maarten ED Card?

The ED Card is a required online entry form for everyone landing on Sint Maarten, the Dutch side of the island.

It’s not a visa, but it’s mandatory for entry, including for short stays or layovers.

💡 Tip from Femke Strietman, travel expert at iVisa:

“Filling it out in advance online aves you from long lines at the airport — especially when flights from San Juan land alongside cruise passengers.”

Do Puerto Ricans need the ED Card?

Yes. All Puerto Rican citizens arriving on the Dutch side need an approved ED Card, even if:

  • You’re just transiting through Princess Juliana Airport (SXM)
  • You’re arriving on a cruise
  • You’re staying in Saint Martin (French side)

You’ll need:

  • A valid U.S. passport (Puerto Rican travelers are U.S. citizens)
  • A return or onward flight or cruise ticket
  • Where you're staying (hotel, resort, Airbnb, or family/friends)
  • Proof of funds for your visit
  • For minors traveling without both parents: a consent letter

What if I’m staying on the French side?

While Saint Martin (French side) doesn’t require the ED Card, arrival location matters.

If you fly into Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) or dock at the Dutch cruise terminal, you still must have an ED Card.

“We booked a stay in Saint Martin, but our JetBlue flight landed on the Dutch side. We had no clue about the ED Card — learned the hard way - endless queues!” – Ana R., San Juan

✅ ED Card Required ❌ ED Card Not Required
Flight arrival at SXM (Dutch airport) Flying into SFG (French airport)
Cruise arrival on Dutch side Ferry from Saint Martin
Transiting through Sint Maarten Overland travel from French side

How to apply from Puerto Rico

It only takes a few minutes:

  1. Visit the official government website or the iVisa ED Card application page or download the iVisa app
  2. Fill in your personal and travel details
  3. Upload a scan of your passport
  4. Get your approved ED Card via email

Why Puerto Rican travelers choose iVisa

Feature iVisa ✅ Official Site ❌
Simple, mobile-friendly form ❌ Can be buggy
Fast turnaround ❌ Risk of slow processing
Support in Spanish & English ❌ Limited assistance

💡 Femke’s pro tip:

“If your cruise itinerary changes last minute or you rebook flights, just apply for a new ED Card — iVisa makes it quick and painless.”
