What you need to know about “La Tomatina”

What is “La Tomatina”?

La “Tomatina” is a Spanish celebration held every year in Buñol, Valencia. This huge festival is held on the last Wednesday of August. During that specific day, numerous visitors throw over-ripe tomatoes at each other to enjoy a crazy tomato fight but do not think it is violently made. It is the opposite: a peaceful event made to enjoy throwing tomatoes and laughing a lot.

The “Tomatina” started in 1945 when a few youngsters were bored about how a local parade was running. Consequently, they decided to find the march's staff and be part of it. During that moment, one of them misstepped and fell, and out of rage, he hit all the things he saw on his way, even some ripe tomatoes from a nearby fruit stand. After a few minutes, some locals began to throw and crush tomatoes just like this person, but they were doing it for fun and not for anger.

In the following years, this event was banned, but the authorities began to accept it over time, and now it is called “La Tomatina de Buñol”. This colorful event is also part of the Festival of International Tourist Interest by the General Secretariat of Tourism in Spain.

When is “La Tomatina”?

“La Tomatina de Buñol” is celebrated on the last Wednesday in August, meaning that each year the date is different.

The big party starts at noon with a vibrant parade, but we recommend you come at least 2 hours in advance.
