What is the Switzerland Schengen Visa?
The Switzerland Schengen Visa is one of the most popular visas for travelers wishing to visit the country and the rest of the Schengen Area without needing individual visas for each destination.
With the Switzerland Schengen Visa, you can visit all 27 Schengen states: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Who is eligible to apply for the Switzerland Schengen Visa?
You must meet certain criteria to be eligible for a Swiss Schengen Visa. These include:

Do children and minors need a Schengen Visa for Switzerland?
Yes, minors from eligible countries must also have a Schengen Visa to visit Switzerland.
Both parents or legal guardians must sign the application form. Additional documents, such as the child's birth certificate, may be necessary to submit during the application process.
How long is the Switzerland Schengen Visa valid?
You can visit Switzerland and the Schengen Area for up to 90 days per entry within a 180-day period. This means you can enter and travel between any Schengen country as often as you like, as long as you do not exceed the cumulative 90 days.
The multiple-entry visa is usually issued for 180 days to 5 years, with a max. stay of 90 days per entry. This decision is based on your supporting documents, travel history, and other factors.
Can I extend the Swiss Schengen Visa?
No, it’s not possible to extend a Schengen Visa. In exceptional circumstances, such as emergencies, an extension is granted. If you need more time in Switzerland or the Schengen Area than your visa allows, you must go home and reapply for a new Schengen Visa.
Switzerland Schengen Visa required documents
To start your application, you need:
- Valid passport: Valid for at least six months after your planned arrival date and with at least two blank pages. If you live in a country different from your country of origin, please submit your proof of residency.
- Travel plans: Include a return flight ticket or any confirmed hotel reservation(s) and tours to show your travel plans.
- Sufficient funds: Show that you can finance your trip by providing bank statements or other documents stating your income and financial stability.
- Travel insurance: The insurance policy must cover medical expenses up to €30,000 in the entire Schengen Zone.
- Two passport-size photos
- Visa application form
- Additional documents: Proof of your professional and social status (if applicable).
How to apply for the Switzerland Schengen Visa
The general steps to apply are:
- Choose the Schengen visa type based on your travel purpose.
- Fill out the Schengen Visa application form accurately.
- Collect all necessary documents, including passport, photos, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, travel insurance, and financial means.
- Book a visa interview appointment at the embassy/consulate or visa application center.
- Present your application and documents at the appointment.
- Pay the visa application fee as per the current rates.

Switzerland Schengen Visa costs and processing time
The Swiss authorities can take up to 45 days to decide, but it can take longer. It is advised to apply for a Swiss visa at least two months before you go.
The government visa fee of about US$85 (may differ per nationality) must be paid during your appointment (half-price for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and free for kids under 6 years old).
You won’t need to pay a government fee if you are:

A CERN or UN worker traveling on an official trip.

Yes, a Switzerland Airport Transit Visa is needed for certain nationals who want to enter the country to change transportation means.
There are two Schengen transit visa categories:

Differences between the Switzerland Schengen Visa and ETIAS
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new travel authorization that will be implemented from the end of 2023. Here are the differences between ETIAS and the Schengen Visa:
- ETIAS is a new travel authorization system designed to improve European security. The purpose is to check whether visa-free travelers visiting the European Union and the Schengen Area pose any regional safety risks.
The ETIAS system is comparable to the United States ESTA system. If you can enjoy visa-free travel and are not required to have a Schengen Visa, you can apply for your ETIAS online once it’s available.

What documents do I need to bring to the Switzerland Schengen Visa appointment?
You should bring the following documents:

Your collected fingerprints in case you have not registered them in the VIS (Visa Information System) for the previous 59 months. Children younger than 12 don’t need to follow this requirement.

Copies of your previous Schengen Visas issued within the past 5 years (if needed).

Prove that you are capable of financing your trip. For example, bring your bank statements from the last 3 months with your full name and current address. You will need to spend a minimum of $100 per day in Switzerland, and $30 per day if you are a student.

If you can’t prove you can support yourself during your trip, you will need an official declaration of guarantee signed by your host and certified by the emigration authorities in Switzerland.

Your proof of accommodation. For example, a confirmed hotel booking. If you are traveling with a group, you will need a certificate from the travel agency.

If you are living in a country different from your country of origin, please bring your proof of residency.

A signed and dated letter of invitation from your host, including his/her Swiss passport or residence permit copy if he/she isn’t Swiss.

Yes, you can! The Switzerland Schengen Visa is a travel authorization that allows you to visit Switzerland and all the countries from the Schengen area.
Can I get the Switzerland Schengen Visa for free?
No. There is a government fee you will usually need to pay.
You need to pay at the embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Center(VAC) a government fee of $88 USD (80 euros) in cash (appointment fee not included). Children between the age of 6 and 11 will need to pay a government fee of $44 USD (40 euros) in cash. Children under 6 years old won't need to pay a government fee.
You won’t need to pay a government fee if you are:
