A smooth journey from Bangkok's second airport
After flying through both Don Mueang (DMK) and the more famous Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), I found DMK to be a breath of fresh air. Unlike the often overcrowded and hectic vibe at BKK, DMK felt much more streamlined and efficient.
From getting to the airport to checking my bags, clearing immigration, and passing through security, the process was smooth and stress-free.
Getting to Don Mueang International Airport
Getting to Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) couldn’t be easier, thanks to its great location and convenient transport options.
Whether you take the Bangkok MRT Red Line, drive via the nearby freeway, or book a ride through Grab, you’ll find plenty of hassle-free ways to reach the airport.
The trip from Bangkok’s city center to DMK is quicker and smoother compared to the often congested journey to Suvarnabhumi Airport, making it a much more relaxing option for travelers.

iVisa travel hack: "Ride-share apps like Grab are super convenient, but connectivity can be spotty at DMK, especially during peak congestion times. To avoid delays, consider downloading offline maps or pre-booking your ride before you reach the arrivals area. It’s a simple way to keep things running smoothly."

When I arrived at DMK, I was dropped off right outside my terminal. The two terminals are connected by a short, convenient walkway, so even if you end up at the wrong terminal (which happens more frequently than you'd think), it’s a quick and easy stroll to the right one.
Checking in: A fast experience
The check-in process at DMK was refreshingly quick, thanks to the smaller crowds. Many airlines at the airport provide self-check-in kiosks, which keep lines short and moving efficiently.

After weighing your bag and attaching the baggage tag, you head to a customs scanner. Here, an agent scans your checked bag and takes it off your hands. It’s all very straightforward and hassle-free.

Next, it’s on to immigration. An airport agent will scan your boarding pass before you meet with an immigration officer. They’ll scan your biometrics, snap a photo, and then you’re good to go.
iVisa Pro Tip: “Don’t forget the 100ml liquid rule for carry-ons—just like in the US. I saw plenty of passengers lose their water bottles at security!”

International Terminal: Stocked with shops and restaurants
When you step into the international terminal at DMK, you’re greeted by a lively selection of shops and restaurants, perfect for some last-minute shopping or grabbing a bite to eat.
The terminal is thoughtfully designed, with plenty of stores, dining options, and cozy seating areas to ensure a comfortable experience for travelers.

If you need to charge your devices, there are dedicated charging spots throughout the terminal. However, these can get busy, and I had to wander over to one of the gates to find an outlet for my phone.
iVisa Travel Hack: "If you can’t find a charging station in the general seating area, head to Gate 51. It’s usually quieter, and outlets are often available there."
For those seeking an extra touch of comfort, DMK has two lounges available for 850 Thai Baht (about $25). These lounges offer food, charging stations, and a relaxing atmosphere—ideal for unwinding before takeoff.
Arriving at Don Mueang International Airport: A seamless and efficient experience
Arriving at Don Mueang International Airport is a breeze. Whether you’re coming from a domestic or international flight, getting through immigration and customs is much faster and more efficient than the experience at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
iVisa Pro Tip: "Try to avoid arriving at DMK between 5 PM and 9 PM, when regional flights bring in the biggest crowds. Immigration lines can get pretty hectic during this time. Early morning arrivals are usually much calmer and far less stressful to navigate!"

The smooth process at DMK means you can quickly make your way through the arrival hall with minimal hassle.
The hall is stocked with all the essentials, including SIM card providers, currency exchange counters, and ATMs, to help you prepare for your trip.
SIM Card Tip: "If you’re planning to get a local SIM card, hit the counter right after exiting immigration. Companies like TrueMove and AIS offer tourist SIMs with excellent data plans, and it’s much faster to set it up here than in the city."

How can I get through DMK Airport security faster?
If you’re from an eligible country, you can apply for a Thailand electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA) before your trip.
With an eVOA, you’ll have access to dedicated immigration counters for a faster, smoother experience.
The process is simple: just fill out the application form on our website or mobile app, upload the necessary documents, and pay the fees, up to 72 hours before your flight.
It’s a great way to save time and avoid queues and uncertainty when you land.
