German citizens and the new UK ETA: What you need to know and expert tips

Summary

New travel rules for the UK: German passport-holders traveling to the UK on or after 2 April 2025 will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

UK ETA validity: It’s valid for two years and allows multiple short visits of up to six months at a time.

Applying is quick and easy: Just fill out an online form, upload your passport details, pay the fee, and get approval in as fast as 24 hours.

German citizens will need a UK ETA from 2 April 2025 – here's what you should know, alongside our insider tips.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA (electronic travel authorization) is a new entry requirement introduced by the UK government for visa-exempt travelers, including German citizens. It aims to enhance border security while simplifying the entry process. Similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada's eTA, it requires travelers to obtain prior approval before flying to the UK.

Do German citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. German passport holders visiting the UK for tourism, business, short-term studies, or transit will need an ETA. However, those with UK residency, work permits, or valid visas are exempt from this requirement.

Can German citizens still travel to the UK without a visa?

German citizens no longer have full visa-free access to the UK for short stays. While a visa isn’t required for tourism or business trips, an ETA will be mandatory.

If you're transiting through the UK and staying airside without passing through border control, you may not need an ETA. However, those exiting the airport must apply in advance.

💡 Catherine Thurtle, iVisa travel expert, advises:

"Traveling without an approved ETA will result in denied boarding or entry at the UK border. If you need one urgently, we offer expedited processing to help you get it on time."

How to apply for a UK ETA

Applying for a UK ETA is a straightforward online process:

1️⃣ Fill out the application form – provide personal details, passport information, and your intended travel dates.

2️⃣ Answer security questions – some applicants may need to provide additional information for screening purposes.

3️⃣ Pay the fee – this covers the UK government fee and iVisa's processing charge.

4️⃣ Receive your ETA via email – most applications are processed within 24 hours.

How long is the ETA valid for German passport holders?

The UK ETA allows multiple entries and remains valid for up to two years or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.

Can German citizens still visit the UK without a visa?

Yes. The ETA is not a visa, and German passport holders will still be able to visit the UK without applying for a traditional visa for short trips. However, securing an ETA before traveling will be required.

Tips for German travelers

German ID cards won’t work – A biometric passport is required; ID cards are no longer accepted post-Brexit.

Apply on a stable internet connection – If you're applying via the UK Government app and the Wi-Fi drops mid-application, you might have to start over. However, with iVisa, we automatically save your progress.

Middle name matters – Ensure your ETA matches your passport exactly, including middle names.

Check your email spam – ETA approvals arrive by email. Don’t miss it in your junk folder.

Screenshot the confirmation – While it's linked to your passport, having proof speeds things up if there's a system glitch.

No work allowed – Even unpaid gigs or remote freelancing could get you denied entry.
