Summary

New travel rules for the UK: French passport-holders traveling to the UK on or after 2 April 2025 will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

UK ETA validity: It’s valid for two years and allows multiple short visits of up to six months at a time.

Applying is quick and easy: Just fill out an online form, upload your passport details, pay the fee, and get approval in as fast as 24 hours.

French citizens will need a UK ETA from 2 April 2025 – here's what you should know, alongside our insider tips.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA (electronic travel authorization) is a new entry requirement introduced by the UK government for visa-exempt travelers, including French citizens. It aims to enhance border security while simplifying the entry process. Similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada's eTA, it requires travelers to obtain prior approval before flying to the UK.

Do French citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. French passport holders visiting the UK for tourism, business, short-term studies, or transit will need an ETA. However, those with UK residency, work permits, or valid visas are exempt from this requirement.

Can French citizens still travel to the UK without a visa?

French citizens no longer have full visa-free access to the UK for short stays. While a visa isn’t required for tourism or business trips, an ETA will be mandatory.

If you're transiting through the UK and staying airside without passing through border control, you may not need an ETA. However, those exiting the airport must apply in advance.

πŸ’‘ Catherine Thurtle, iVisa travel expert, advises:

"Traveling without an approved ETA will result in denied boarding or entry at the UK border. If you need one urgently, we offer expedited processing to help you get it on time."

How to apply for a UK ETA

Applying for a UK ETA is a straightforward online process:

1️⃣ Fill out the application form – provide personal details, passport information, and your intended travel dates.

2️⃣ Answer security questions – some applicants may need to provide additional information for screening purposes.

3️⃣ Pay the fee – this covers the UK government fee and iVisa's processing charge.

4️⃣ Receive your ETA via email – most applications are processed within 24 hours.

How long is the ETA valid for French passport holders?

The UK ETA allows multiple entries and remains valid for up to two years or until your passport expires β€” whichever comes first.

Can French citizens still visit the UK without a visa?

Yes. The ETA is not a visa, and French passport holders will still be able to visit the UK without applying for a traditional visa for short trips with the UK ETA.

Why this matters for French travelers

πŸ… You're in good company – more than 3.6 million French citizens travel to the UK annually, making it one of France's most popular destinations.

🏒 Business and education links – many French professionals and students frequently travel to the UK, so compliance with the ETA system is crucial.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Large French expat community – the UK is home to over 300,000 French residents, many of whom host visiting friends and family. Remember to share this article so they can stay up-to-date.

✈️ Great flight connectivity – with direct flights from Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Nice to London and other UK cities, obtaining an ETA ahead of time will help avoid travel disruptions.

Tips for French travelers

❌ No Carte d’IdentitΓ©! – French ID cards are NOT valid for UK travel. You must bring your biometric passport.

βœ… Apply before that spontaneous trip – You won't be able to get an ETA on arrival and try to apply at least 72 hours in advance. Although iVisa can help with our Super-Rush option.

❌ ETA β‰  Schengen rules – You might be used to open EU travel, but the UK has stricter checks. Have your documents ready.

βœ… Check your spam folder. Your ETA approval email may land in junk mail.

❌ No work without a visa – Even unpaid freelance work can cause trouble at the border.

βœ… Keep a screenshot – Your ETA is digital, but having proof speeds up entry if there’s a system glitch.
