French citizens will need a UK ETA from 2 April 2025 β here's what you should know, alongside our insider tips.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA (electronic travel authorization) is a new entry requirement introduced by the UK government for visa-exempt travelers, including French citizens. It aims to enhance border security while simplifying the entry process. Similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada's eTA, it requires travelers to obtain prior approval before flying to the UK.
Do French citizens need a UK ETA?
Yes. French passport holders visiting the UK for tourism, business, short-term studies, or transit will need an ETA. However, those with UK residency, work permits, or valid visas are exempt from this requirement.
Can French citizens still travel to the UK without a visa?
French citizens no longer have full visa-free access to the UK for short stays. While a visa isnβt required for tourism or business trips, an ETA will be mandatory.
If you're transiting through the UK and staying airside without passing through border control, you may not need an ETA. However, those exiting the airport must apply in advance.
π‘ Catherine Thurtle, iVisa travel expert, advises:
"Traveling without an approved ETA will result in denied boarding or entry at the UK border. If you need one urgently, we offer expedited processing to help you get it on time."
How to apply for a UK ETA
Applying for a UK ETA is a straightforward online process:
1οΈβ£ Fill out the application form β provide personal details, passport information, and your intended travel dates.
2οΈβ£ Answer security questions β some applicants may need to provide additional information for screening purposes.
3οΈβ£ Pay the fee β this covers the UK government fee and iVisa's processing charge.
4οΈβ£ Receive your ETA via email β most applications are processed within 24 hours.
How long is the ETA valid for French passport holders?
The UK ETA allows multiple entries and remains valid for up to two years or until your passport expires β whichever comes first.
Can French citizens still visit the UK without a visa?
Yes. The ETA is not a visa, and French passport holders will still be able to visit the UK without applying for a traditional visa for short trips with the UK ETA.
