All Italian citizens will need an ETA to visit the UK from 2 April 2025. Here’s everything Italians need to know about the UK ETA.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a new electronic entry requirement introduced by the UK Government for visa-exempt travelers, including Italian citizens. It is designed to enhance border security and streamline entry procedures. Similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada's eTA, this system requires travelers to obtain pre-approval before boarding their flight to the UK.
Do Italians need a UK ETA?
Italian citizens traveling to the UK for tourism, business, short-term studies, or transit will need an ETA. However, if you hold a UK visa, residency, or specific work permits, you may not need one.
Can Italian citizens still travel to the UK without a visa?
Italian tourists and business travelers no longer have complete visa-free access to the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – not the Republic of Ireland). The UK ETA is not currently needed for transit as long as you stay airside and don't leave the airport.
Italian travelers don't require a full visa for short-term visits if they have a UK ETA.
💡 Catherine Thurtle, iVisa travel expert, says:
"Attempting to travel without an ETA will result in denied boarding or entry at the border. We offer express options to get it quickly if you're traveling last minute."
How to apply for a UK ETA?
Applying for an ETA with us is a simple online process:
1️⃣ Complete the online application: Provide personal details, passport information, and travel plans.

How long is the ETA valid for Italian passport holders?
The ETA is valid for multiple entries up to two years. Travelers must ensure that their ETA is valid at the time of travel.
Can Italians still travel without a visa?
Yes. The UK ETA is not a visa, and Italian passport holders can still visit the UK without needing a traditional visa for short stays. However, the ETA will be a mandatory requirement for entry.
