Mandatory UK ETA for Austrians in 2025: New travel rules explained

Summary
  • Austrians need a UK ETA from April 2025 – Without it, you won’t be allowed entry.

  • Apply early to avoid delays – Processing takes up to three days, but peak times may be longer.

  • Check passport details carefully – Ensure your name matches exactly to avoid rejection.

Starting in April 2025, Austrian travelers heading to the UK will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before their trip.

This means that Austrians can no longer enter the United Kingdom without permission, and not having an ETA will result in denied boarding or entry.

Keep reading to find out more about how to apply and avoid common mistakes during the process.

What is the UK ETA, and why do Austrians need it?

The UK ETA is not a visa but rather a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers.

Austrians, along with other EU citizens, must obtain this authorization as part of the UK's updated border security measures post-Brexit.

Can Austrians still visit the UK without a visa?

Austrian travelers no longer have full visa-free access to the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – not the Republic of Ireland). However, for short-term visits, an ETA is required instead of a full visa.

If you’re transiting through the UK, an ETA is not required.

💡 Catherine Thurtle, iVisa travel expert, notes:

"Many travelers assume they can still enter freely as before. However, without an ETA, you will be refused at check-in or the border."

UK ETA for Austrian business travelers

Austria has strong trade ties with the UK. Business travelers can avoid unnecessary delays by applying for an ETA well in advance.

Once granted, the ETA allows you to visit the UK multiple times over two years, making it a convenient solution for frequent travelers.

How to apply for a UK ETA fast

Follow these three simple steps:

  1. Submit your details: Apply via the official UK government website, or through our online platform or mobile app.

You will need to upload a clear digital passport scan and a recent photo. If you don't know how, don't worry, we have a handy step-by-step guide.

  1. Pay the ETA fee: Use a secure payment method like a credit/debit card, PayPal, Amazon Pay, or other available options.

  2. Receive confirmation: ETA approvals typically take up to three working days, though many applications are processed faster.

Your ETA is digitally linked to your passport, so there’s no need to print anything.

How long can Austrians stay in the UK with the ETA?

Once approved, the UK ETA allows Austrian citizens to stay in the UK for up to six months per visit.

It's valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If your passport expires before the two years, you’ll need to apply again.

Common mistakes Austrian travelers make (and how to avoid them)

Avoid these common errors to ensure a hassle-free ETA application:

⚠️ Mistake Solution
Passport validity overlooked Ensure your passport is valid for the entire trip.
Applying too late Submit your ETA request at least a week before travel.
Unclear photo submission Use a high-quality image to avoid delays.

For more details, check out how to prevent UK ETA application rejections.

➡️ Johanna Schuster, a travel consultant, advises:

"Austrian travelers should apply for their ETA as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute stress. If you know someone traveling to the UK, share this article to make sure they are aware of this new requirement."

Additional UK entry rules to keep in mind for Austrians

Even with an approved ETA, make sure you’re prepared for UK border controls with these travel tips:

  • Proof of onward travel: Border officers may ask for evidence of your return flight or next destination.
  • UK customs rules: Familiarize yourself with customs regulations to avoid issues when bringing goods into the UK.

💡Michael Angelo from The Project Kosmos shared his experience:

"Everywhere in the UK they make you take out and separate all liquids from your hand luggage. To speed up the process, pack them into a small transparent bag for easy unpacking."

More expert tips for Austrian travelers to the UK

Austrian ID cards won’t work – A biometric passport is required; ID cards are no longer accepted post-Brexit.

Apply on a stable internet connection – If you're using the UK Government app and the Wi-Fi drops mid-application, you might have to restart. However, with iVisa, you'll automatically save your progress.

Middle name matters – Ensure your ETA matches your passport exactly, including middle names.

Check your email spam folder – ETA approvals arrive by email.

Screenshot the confirmation – While the ETA is linked to your passport, having proof speeds things up if there's a system glitch.
