This is part of the Been There, Done That series, where our expert globetrotters travel the world to get the insights and information you need for a seamless experience.

When it comes to travel, packing efficiently can make or break your experience. Whether you're a seasoned globetrotter or a first-time traveler, having a well-thought-out packing strategy is essential.

After flying around as a travel journalist, I have picked up some easy but practical packing tips that I swear by. From essential document organization to selecting the proper footwear, here’s how I pack smart to ensure a hassle-free trip.

Tip 1: Pack a specific documents pouch

Getting your documents right is essential for smooth international travel, and I've learned a lot through my own experiences. Have a designated document pouch that includes:

  • Visa: Always check visa requirements well in advance, remember at iVisa, we specialize in helping you get your documents hassle-free. Once you have an approved visa, I like to print out a copy to carry with me to show to immigration officers if needed.

  • Printed travel itinerary: I find it helpful to print out my hotel and flight information. This has been crucial when dealing with immigration officers upon arrival.

  • Local directions: Printing directions to my hotel in the local language has saved me from confusion when getting a ride from a local taxi when my phone couldn't connect.

  • Passport copies: I carry a color copy of my passport. This is crucial if something happens to your passport when traveling. A color copy of the passport can help expedite getting a replacement at the embassy and work with immigration.

  • Health documentation: For destinations where health declarations are required, like East Africa where I needed a Yellow Fever vaccination, having a copy of my vaccine card was essential to get into the country.

By preparing these documents ahead of time and keeping them packed in an easy to access pouch, I've navigated immigration and unexpected situations more smoothly.

Tip 2: Buy toiletries at your destination

A store in Malaysia has any toiletries you could need for your trip.

Packing toiletries can feel like a nightmare. From liquid limits at airports to trying to avoid it exploding all over your clothes, toiletries are often a concern for those traveling. Over the years, I find myself sticking to these essential tips:

  • Shop when I arrive: I've found that basic toiletries like lotion, shampoo, and sunscreen are easy to find almost anywhere you go. It saves space in your luggage to purchase them upon arrival.

  • Skip packing basics: If you're aiming for a minimalist packing approach, consider skipping items like basic t-shirts and purchasing them locally if needed.

  • Don’t over pack: I always pack only the essential toiletries. Using a travel toiletry bag helps keep everything organized and compliant with airport security rules. I've had my lotions and skincare products confiscated before because they were in containers that were too large, even if they weren't full.

  • Prepare for security: Transferring your toiletries into a clear, organized bag makes it easier to pass through security without any items being taken away.

By following these tips, you can streamline your packing process and navigate airport security more smoothly, ensuring a stress-free start to your journey.

Tip 3: Pack your medication in your carry-on

From my own travel experiences, these are the most important things to consider when taking medication with you on a trip:

  • Pack it in your carry-on: Always carry necessary medication and medical supplies, such as contact solution, in your carry-on bag so that you have uninterrupted accessibility to it, avoid issues with lost or delayed luggage, maintain proper storage conditions, and simplify customs procedures.

  • Bring extra supplies: It's crucial to pack more medication than you'll need for the duration of your trip. This prepares you for unexpected delays or emergencies that could extend your travel time.

  • Plan ahead: Losing access to essential medication can be challenging, whether you're traveling domestically or internationally. Packing smartly in your carry-on bag can mitigate potential issues and ensure your health needs are met throughout your journey.

By adhering to these tips, you can travel with peace of mind knowing you're prepared for any unforeseen circumstances regarding your medication.

Tip 4: Leave room in your suitcase

Overpacking on the way to your destination limits your ability to bring back souvenirs or items you purchase during your trip. While minimalist packing can be efficient, having a bit of extra space allows flexibility for unexpected finds or gifts.

Leaving room in your suitcase also helps with organization and prevents items from becoming wrinkled or damaged during travel. It's a practical strategy to ensure you're prepared for any additions to your luggage on the journey back.

Ultimately, striking a balance between packing essentials and leaving space for new discoveries enhances your travel experience and ensures you can bring home memories without the stress of fitting everything in.

Tip 5: Pick a versatile pair of shoes

Choosing the right shoes can make a big difference in your packing strategy, based on my own experiences:

Opt for shoes that are versatile and compact to avoid overpacking. A classic pair of comfortable flats is ideal for both dinners out and casual strolls. Wear sturdy tennis shoes on your travel day for comfort and support.

Include a pair of flip-flops in your suitcase—they're lightweight and perfect for warm weather destinations, beach days, or lounging at the hotel.

Resist the urge to pack heels or bulky boots unless you're sure you'll wear them. They take up valuable space in your suitcase and often go unworn. Also remember that if you wear shoes that cover your ankles to the airport, you might run into issues at security and be required to take them off for security checks.

Remember, packing fewer pairs of shoes not only saves space but also lightens your load and simplifies your travel experience.

Tip 6: Write it out

Visualization plays a crucial role in packing efficiently, as I've learned from personal experience. Start by listing everything you think you'll need, including essentials. Writing it down helps highlight potential overpacking tendencies.

Take it a step further by physically laying out your items a few days before your trip. Spread clothes, toiletries, and other essentials on your bed or floor. This visual inventory allows you to assess whether you're packing only what's necessary.

Seeing everything laid out can prompt you to make thoughtful edits to your packing list.

Remember, packing light is a skill that improves with practice. Establishing a system that suits your needs will streamline future trips and contribute to smoother travels overall. It's an investment in stress-free adventures ahead!

Tip 7: You don’t need an outfit for every day

My final tip is one I learnt early on in my adventures and as a result I've refined my packing strategy:

  1. Versatile packing: Pack versatile, lightweight pieces that can be layered and mixed to create multiple outfits.

  2. Fabric choices: Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics like synthetics, wool, denim, and knit, avoiding easily wrinkled fabrics like linen.

  3. Color considerations: Opt for darker colors to hide wrinkles and stay cooler in warmer destinations.

Remember, efficient packing isn't just about what you bring—it's about making your travels as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Safe travels!
