Visa-exempt: Who doesn't need to apply for India Medical eVisa?

There are a few specific cases where individuals are exempt from applying for the India Medical e-Visa:

  • Nationals of Bhutan and Nepal: These individuals do not require visas or passports to enter and stay in India, and there is no limit on the duration of their stay. However, they should not transit through mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Pakistan before entering India.

  • Overseas Citizens of India and persons of Indian Origin Cardholders: These individuals are exempt from visa requirements and can live and work in India without any time limit. This policy does not apply to Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals.

  • Nationals of the Maldives: Since March 1979, Maldivian nationals have been able to enter India without a visa for up to 90 days.

For those not covered by these exemptions, the India Medical e-Visa is required for medical-related travel to India.

Do children also require the India Medical eVisa?

Yes, children also require the India Medical eVisa if they are traveling to India for medical purposes. Every minor must have their own eVisa regardless of age, and their legal guardians must apply for it.

When applying for a minor, guardians need to provide additional documents, such as copies of the minor's birth certificate and a consent letter signed by both parents or legal guardians.

These documents are necessary to confirm the relationship between the child and the guardians, ensuring all legal requirements are met for the child's travel to India.

India Medical eVisa validity: How long can I stay in India?

The India Medical eVisa is a multiple-entry visa that allows the holder to enter India up to three times. Each entry permits a stay of up to 60 days in total from the date of arrival in India. The visa itself must be used within 120 days from the date of issuance, meaning travelers must enter India within this period for the visa to remain valid.

Key points to remember about the India Medical eVisa include:

  • Multiple entries: This visa allows up to three separate entries into India.

  • Maximum stay: Each entry allows a 60-day stay in the country.

  • Visa validity: Must enter India within 120 days from the issuance of the visa.

  • Type of entry: It is a multiple-entry visa, ideal for patients needing follow-up visits.

These terms ensure travelers can plan their medical visits accordingly, with enough flexibility for multiple consultations or treatment sessions within a two-month period per visit.

Can I extend my India Medical eVisa?

The India Medical eVisa typically cannot be extended. Travelers must plan their medical treatment within the stipulated duration of each visit, which is up to 60 days per entry.

In exceptional cases, an extension may be considered by the local FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) based on medical advisories or serious health conditions.

  • Digital photograph: A recent passport-style color photo with a white background, which can be taken with a phone or camera.

  • Medical letter: A letter from the hospital or medical institution in India stating the purpose of the visit and the expected duration of treatment.

I’m going to Mumbai for a medical procedure. The eVisa application needs my date of arrival and I’m not yet sure of my dates. What happens if I list September 25th but end up arriving a day early on the 24th? Or would it be safer to say the 25th and actually arrive on the 27th?

It's recommended to enter India on the exact date you specify on your eVisa application or later, within the visa's validity period. Arriving a day early can complicate your entry, as the eVisa specifically notes your expected date of arrival. If you think there might be a change in your travel plans, it's safer to list a slightly later date, like the 25th, and arrive on the 27th, as this falls within the normal validity period of your visa starting from the listed arrival date.

I’m going to India for about a week for medical treatment. I’d like to know whether the validity of the visa starts from the day I apply, or does it begin when I actually land in India?

The validity of the India Medical eVisa begins from the date of your first arrival in India, not from the application or issue date. The visa is valid for 60 days from the date of your first entry into the country, and you're allowed triple entries within this period. This setup allows you to manage your treatment schedule effectively within those two months.

I have surgery scheduled in Delhi next month. I know I can’t make the trip alone due to the recovery period. Can I include my mother and brother in my visa application as my support? If that’s not possible, what kind of visa should they apply for?

Your family members, such as your mother and brother, cannot be included on your medical visa. They should apply for a Medical Attendant eVisa, which is linked to your medical visa. This type of visa is designed for relatives who accompany someone coming to India for medical treatment. Each attendant must apply separately, and their visas will be tied to the patient’s medical visa.
