Summary
  • Starting in late 2026, Mexican citizens will need to apply for ETIAS before traveling to Italy.

  • ETIAS is not a visa, but a required digital authorisation linked to your passport.

  • It’s valid for 3 years, allows multiple short trips of up to 90 days, and is easy to apply for online.

If you hold a Mexican passport and are planning a trip to Italy, here’s an important update for your future travels: ETIAS.

Beginning in late 2026, all Mexican citizens will be required to apply for the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) before entering Italy or any other Schengen Area country.

Do Mexicans need a visa to visit Italy?

No, Mexican citizens can still visit Italy without a visa for short stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

But from 2026 onward, you’ll need ETIAS approval before traveling.

What is ETIAS, and how does it work?

ETIAS is a new system created by the European Union to pre-screen travelers from visa-free countries. It’s part of a wider effort to improve security while keeping travel convenient for visitors like those from Mexico.

ETIAS is not a visa, but it will be a mandatory online screening, similar to the U.S. ESTA. Without it, you won’t be able to board your flight to Italy once the system is live.

ETIAS is:

  • 100% online
  • Valid for tourism, business, transit, or short-term medical travel
  • Linked to your passport (no printout needed)

Once approved, your ETIAS allows you to visit 30 Schengen countries, not just Italy.

ETIAS requirements for Mexican citizens

To apply, you’ll need:

Requirement Notes Format
Passport Valid for 3+ months beyond stay Digital copy
Photo Recent, clear background Digital format
Email Address Active account N/A
Payment Method Credit/debit card N/A

💡 Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert:

"It’s a simple form, but make sure your passport has enough validity. That’s the number one issue we see."

How to apply for the Italy ETIAS from Mexico

Here’s how the process will work once the system launches:

1️⃣ Visit the[official ETIAS portal or apply via iVisa or the mobile app for an even faster service.

2️⃣ Complete the online form with your passport and travel info.

3️⃣ Pay securely using a debit card, credit card, or PayPal.

Wait for your confirmation email, it usually arrives within minutes to 72 hours.

📌 Once approved, ETIAS is digitally linked to your passport. You don’t need to print it.

ETIAS validity and benefits

Once approved, ETIAS allows:

  • Multiple entries to Italy and other Schengen countries
  • Short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day window
  • Validity for 3 years, or until your passport expires (whichever comes first)

Common questions from Mexican travelers

Do I need to register for an ETIAS for every trip?

No. Your ETIAS is good for multiple trips, as long as your passport and authorisation are still valid.

Can I study or work in Italy with ETIAS?

No. ETIAS only covers short visits. For anything longer or official, you’ll need a national visa from the Italian consulate.

Is there an age limit for ETIAS?

Yes, the fee only applies to travelers aged 18 to 70. Those outside this range may qualify for a fee exemption but still need to apply.

What if I want to stay longer in Italy?

For stays over 90 days, you’ll need a long-term visa based on your purpose:

  • Student visa: Enroll in an accredited course or university
  • Work visa: With an Italian employer or sponsored job offer
  • Family reunification visa: To join close relatives to live in Italy
