Applying for a visa can often feel overwhelming, especially when your mind is already focused on the trip. We’re here to help you understand how to apply for your Mexico tourist visa.
Do Indian citizens need a visa to visit Mexico?
Indian citizens planning to visit Mexico for tourism, business, or transit purposes must have a visa before entering the country.
However, there are a few exceptions:
-
You hold a valid multiple-entry visa from Canada, the USA, Japan, the United Kingdom, or any of the countries in the Schengen area.
-
You’re a permanent resident of Canada, the USA, Japan, the United Kingdom, a Schengen member state, or a member country of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, and Peru).
-
You’re entering Mexico via a cruise ship.
If none apply, you must apply for a sticker visa at the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate.

Additional travel requirements: Mexico tourist card (FMM)
If you’re entering Mexico by land, you’ll also need a Mexico tourist card (Forma Migratoria Múltiple or FMM). This isn’t a visa but an immigration entry form that collects information about your visit. It’s mandatory for all foreigners, even those who don’t need a visa.
"When I flew into Mexico, the FMM was included in my airfare. But I had to get it at the crossing point when I crossed the border by land." — Manisha, Delhi, solo traveler
Our travel journalist, Kerri Gregory, recently chatted with fellow travelers about their experiences with Mexican visas and traveling to Mexico, and this is what she found:
- Karan from Bangalore revealed that when he arrived, the immigration officer intended to give him only 30 days until he politely asked for 180. If you don’t ask, they often assume you’re staying short-term.
- “One thing I learned the hard way is to check the number of days written on your FMM before leaving the immigration counter,” agreed Rohan, another traveler. “The officer only gave me 30 days instead of 180. I didn’t realize this until I got to my Airbnb.”
- Look after your FMM card as if your life depends on it. Priya, a backpacker, recalled, “I lost my FMM during a trip to Playa del Carmen. Replacing it took a full day at the immigration office and cost 600 MXN (about \$30). It was such a hassle!”
- Be very careful about how long you are in the country. “Overstaying my FMM by two weeks was costly,” admitted Vikram, a digital nomad. “I had to pay a fine of about 5,000 MXN (around \$250 USD) at the airport. It was cash-only, so be prepared.”
- Ananya, an expat, advises, “When applying for a temporary resident visa, going through the Mexican consulate in my home country was challenging. The toughest part was proving economic solvency with 12 months of bank statements.”
