Mecca is a destination for millions of Muslims every year. As the holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, it draws pilgrims from around the world for both Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

Before the Hajj season, Egyptian citizens can perform Umrah with a Saudi Arabia Umrah visa. The advantage of this visa is that you don’t need to visit a Saudi embassy—the process is entirely online! Below are the visa requirements and details about the electronic Umrah visa.

What is Umrah and its significance in Islam?

Umrah is a significant Islamic practice, also known as the lesser pilgrimage. It can be performed at any time of the year and is not obligatory like Hajj, but it is highly recommended. The journey allows Muslims to purify their souls, seek forgiveness, and deepen their relationship with Allah.

Saudi Arabia Makkah Maskid

The rituals involved in Umrah

  1. Ihram: Pilgrims don special white cloth. For men, it's two white sheets, and for women, modest clothing that covers the body.

  2. Tawaf: Pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise, symbolizing unity and devotion to Allah.

  3. Sa'i: Pilgrims run seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hagar’s search for water for her son, Prophet Ibrahim.

  4. Halq or Taqsir: Halq involves shaving the head, and Taqsir refers to trimming at least an inch of hair, marking the completion of Umrah.

Umrah visa rules

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has updated the Umrah visa rules. Now, Umrah visas are valid for 90 days from the issue date, giving pilgrims more flexibility. However, for the current season, visas will expire earlier than in previous years. This change allows Saudi authorities to better prepare for Hajj, and all international pilgrims must leave by the expiry date to avoid penalties.

How to apply for an Umrah visa from Egypt

Egyptian citizens can apply for the electronic Umrah visa, but not during the Hajj days. Children must also have a valid Umrah visa to join their parents.

Application process

  • Select an authorized agent: Umrah visas can only be processed through approved travel agencies. Select a licensed agent in Egypt to guide you through the application process.

  • Submit required documents: Provide the necessary documents, including your passport, photos, and completed application form, to your chosen agent.

  • Pay the visa fees: Fees may vary depending on the agent and the services they provide. Confirm the total cost before proceeding with payment.

  • Wait for processing: The processing time for an Umrah visa typically takes a few days. Your agent will inform you once your visa is approved.

  • Receive your visa: Once approved, you will receive your visa along with your passport. Review the details to ensure they are correct.

Eligibility criteria for an Umrah visa

  • GCC residents can apply for an Umrah visa online.

  • Egyptians who hold U.S., UK, or Schengen visas or are permanent residents of those regions can apply for a visa on arrival.

  • If you don't meet these criteria, you can apply for an Umrah visa through a travel package with an approved travel agency.

Umrah visa requirements

To apply for an Umrah visa, you will need:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of validity.

  • Recent passport-sized photos.

  • Proof of non-refundable flight tickets.

  • A mahram relationship document for female pilgrims.

  • Health insurance covering COVID-19 infections.

  • Proof of meningitis vaccination (within 10 days of travel but no older than three years).

Many of these items are often included in Umrah travel packages, so be sure to check with your travel agency.

"I’ve performed Umrah multiple times, and the best tip I can give is to book everything early, especially accommodation near the Haram. Prices spike closer to Ramadan." — Youssef, Alexandria.

Umrah visa fees and processing times

The processing time for the Umrah visa generally takes 5-10 days, depending on your country of residence. The visa fee ranges between $380 and $490, but the overall cost, including the Umrah package, can go up to $1,500 to $2,000.

Can you use a tourist visa for Umrah?

Yes, if you qualify for a Saudi Arabia tourist visa, you can use it for Umrah. This visa offers longer stays compared to the Umrah-specific visa. Unfortunately, this option is not currently available for Egyptian nationals, but if you qualify, you can apply online with us.

Travel tips for a smooth Umrah pilgrimage

1.Plan ahead: Make sure to apply for your visa well in advance to avoid delays.

2.Avoid peak times: While Umrah is available year-round, avoid performing it during Ramadan or the Hajj season to experience less crowded conditions.

3.Download the required apps: The Tawakkalna and Nusuk apps are mandatory for permits and health records.

4.Stay hydrated: If performing Umrah during the summer, temperatures can be extreme, so staying hydrated is crucial.

5.Keep valuables safe: Be aware of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas around the Haram.

"Booking accommodation close to the Haram made my Umrah experience so much easier, especially for daily prayers." — Fatima, Cairo

Precautions and guidelines for a safe Umrah pilgrimage

  • Follow all guidelines provided by the Saudi government to ensure your safety.

  • Keep your documents secure and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

  • Take necessary medications with you, especially during extreme weather.
