Dreaming of a new life in the United States? Find out if you’re the right age for the Green Card Lottery.
The Diversity Visa (DV) Program, popularly known as the Green Card Lottery, offers a pathway to US residency for thousands of people from across the globe each year. Administered by the US Department of State, this program is designed to help diversify the immigrant population in the USA.
A common question from potential applicants is about age restrictions: "Is there a maximum age limit for entering the Green Card lottery?" We’ll help you understand the application requirements to improve your chances of being picked in the Lottery. Let’s get started.
Understanding the main eligibility requirements for the Green Card Lottery
There is no maximum age limit for entering the Green Card Lottery. Eligibility is based on your nationality and meeting specific education or work experience requirements, not your age.
Nationality eligibility
The DV Program is available to individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. Each year, the list of eligible countries is adjusted based on which countries and regions have sent fewer than 50,000 immigrants to the US over the past five years.
Before applying, you can check the USAGov website to determine whether your country qualifies.
Educational or work experience requirements
If your country qualifies to enter the Green Card Lottery, the next step is to determine if you meet one of the following requirements:
-
Education: You should have completed a US high school education or its equivalent, meaning the successful completion of a 12-year course of formal elementary and secondary education.
-
Work experience: If you don’t meet the education requirements, you can qualify through work experience. You need at least two years of work experience within the last five years in a job that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform.
You can use the US Department of Labor’s O*Net OnLine website to check if your job is classified within Job Zone 4 or 5 and has a Specific Vocational Preparation (SVP) rating of 7.0 or higher.
These eligibility criteria are designed to ensure that potential Green Card Lottery winners are well-prepared to contribute to the US economy and society.
