Planning a trip from the United States to Belize? Whether you're going to relax on the cayes, snorkel in turquoise waters, or explore ancient ruins, there’s one essential travel step to take before you fly: the Belize Travel Declaration.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through who needs it, how to complete it, and why skipping it could lead to serious delays.

What is the Belize travel declaration?

The Belize Travel Declaration is a mandatory customs and immigration form for travelers entering or exiting the country via Philip Goldson International Airport.

It’s not a visa. It’s a quick digital form that tells Belizean authorities about your trip and what you’re bringing. Once you submit it, you’ll get a QR code by email to show at the airport.

"We didn’t know about the declaration and got stopped at the airport. There was no signage and barely any Wi-Fi, and we had to scramble to complete it on our phones while the line kept moving. Definitely won’t make that mistake again," said Derek R., a traveler from Austin.

Do US citizens need a visa for Belize?

No. US passport holders can enter Belize without a visa for up to 30 days. You’ll receive a 30-day entry stamp when you land.

But even without a visa, the Belize Travel Declaration is still required if you fly in or out of the country.

If you're staying longer than 30 days:

  • Visit a local immigration office before your stamp expires
  • Pay $100 USD per person for each additional 30-day period
  • Some immigration officers may approve longer extensions, depending on your situation

"We visited the San Pedro immigration office on day 29. It was quick and easy, but definitely bring cash. No cards accepted," explained Melanie P. from Chicago.

When do I need to fill out the Belize travel declaration ⏰

Travelers must complete the Belize Travel Declaration before arrival and before departure. The form is valid for one entry only.

It takes about 10 minutes to complete on our site and doesn’t require uploading any documents. After submitting, remember to save or print your QR code.

"We filled out the form the night before our flight and showed the QR code at customs. Others without it were sent aside and held up for a while," shared Jacob and Brianna H., from San Diego.

What can you bring to Belize? 🧳🍬

Here’s a quick look at what’s usually fine and what might be a problem:

Avoid bringing:

  • Fresh meat, dairy, or produce
  • Homemade or unsealed food
  • Wrapped gifts (customs may want to open them)

Usually allowed if declared:

  • Electronics or gifts for personal use
  • Sealed snacks like granola bars and noodles
  • 1 liter of duty-free alcohol per adult

"I brought wrapped Christmas gifts in my carry-on. Customs unwrapped a couple to inspect them, but there were no issues since I declared everything clearly," said April K., visiting family in Belmopan.
